Ahlena came to ceramics from a background in interdisciplinary visual arts, and to nerikomi in search of a way to echo the quiet colours, organic forms, and subtle variations of nature. Nerikomi (練り込み) is a traditional Japanese method of layering coloured clays to form patterns that run through the vessel itself.

Each stage, from colouring and kneading clay, forming patterned canes, slicing, assembling, and shaping slabs on the wheel, asks for patience and intention. A single mug can hold weeks of quiet work, becoming both an object and a form of meditation.
